CMS Men's Track and Field Takes Fourth Straight SCIAC Title

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sarath Kakani won the shot put, Kaden Cassidy took first in the discus, and Colin Scanlon earned first place in the 400-meter hurdles as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team earned its fourth straight SCIAC Championship by 48 points over second-place Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday at Strehle Track.

CMS finished with exactly 200 points, while Pomona-Pitzer was second with 152 and Chapman was third with 129. The Stags also earned wins yesterday in the hammer (Kavin Prasanna) and javelin (George Kruger), sweeping the throwing events with four different athletes coming in first.

Kakani earned first in the shot put with a top distance of 15.32 meters (50'3.25") for his third straight SCIAC title. Jacob Yep came in third place with a throw of 14 meters even to earn All-SCIAC honors, one year after he came in a close fourth behind three of his teammates.

Cassidy was first in the discus on Sunday with a throw of 45.18 meters (148'3") to finish 6 feet, 6 inches ahead of second-place Daniel Amelinez-Robles of Caltech. Jason Bowman was fourth for the Stags at 40.79 to add to the CMS point total.

Scanlon won the 400-meter hurdles in 53.07, finishing .58 ahead of Joshua Collier of La Verne. He was slightly behind his own CMS record time of 52.57 which he set earlier this year.

Mason Ratkovich earned All-SCIAC honors in the 1500 meters with a time of 3:50.58, while Adam Cohan was seventh to score for the Stags. Joshua Martinez and Evan Siegel were second and third to make the podium for the Stags with All-SCIAC honors in the 110-meter hurdles, with Martinez finishing in 14.77 and Siegel clocking a 15.51. Martinez broke the CMS record with a 14.50 in prelims on Saturday, which had stood for 33 years.

Nick Teresi was All-SCIAC in the 400 meters, finishing in 48.21, while Ellis DelVecchio was the runner-up in the 800 meters in 1:50.80, a new PR that moves him up from seventh to fifth at CMS. Lou DeLano (fourth) and Matthew Jabro (seventh) all scored for the Stags. Nick Taubenheim (fifth), Adam Sage (sixth) and Oliver Pick (seventh) all scored in the 5000 meters, and Jonathan Holcombe scored in the triple jump (fifth).

CMS will compete in several other events in the next three weeks as it tries to earn qualifying marks for the NCAA Division III Championships, starting with the Occidental Invitational on May 11.
