CLAREMONT, Calif. - Were it not for the dominance of Kenyon (which won 31 straight national championships from 1980-2010), the CMS men’s swimming and diving program might have filled the old Ducey Gymnasium trophy case with national championship trophies during the 1980s. The Stags finished as the national runner-ups to Kenyon a total of six times between 1983-90, with the first coming in 1983, when they set a whopping seven national records on their way to coming in second.
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Bill Morrow is one of the most decorated swimmers in CMS history, earning All-America honors 10 times, bridging the gap between the program’s NAIA years (seven All-America honors from 1974-76) and the NCAA years (three All-America honors in 1977). His signature effort, though, came during the 1975-76 season at the NAIA Championships in Marshall, Minnesota, when he captured the national title in the 100 fly.
CLAREMONT, Calif. - Claremont-Mudd won the 1967 NAIA National Championship without having a dominant swimmer, winning only the 800 free relay out of the 18 events competed. In 1969 and 1970, the program had two, Eric Jones and David Tempkin, who combined for 14 national championships (seven apiece) over those two seasons to lead the Stags to two runner-up finishes.
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd men's swimming and diving team stood on the starting blocks for the 800-yard freestyle relay at the 1967 NAIA Championships in Buffalo, with a chance to make history for a department that hadn't even reached its 10th birthday.
