CMS Men's Tennis Opens Dual Season With Pair of 5-2 Wins

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team began its 2023 dual season by picking up a pair of 5-2 wins, knocking off Biola and Concordia on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

Advik Mareedu won both of his singles matches at the No. 1 line, improving to 11-0 in his rookie season after sweeping his way to the ITA Cup title in the fall.

The Stags opened the day against Biola, which defeated CMS a year ago 4-3 in La Mirada, but this time around, CMS was able to pick up a key doubles point in a tight contest. Matthew Robinson and Christian Settles won 6-4 at No. 1, and after the Eagles leveled the match with a tiebreaker win at No. 2, Nathan Arimilli and Christopher Li earned a 7-6 win on their third match point at No. 3 (7-4 in the tiebreaker) to give CMS a 1-0 lead.

Mareedu put the Stags up 2-0 with his straight set win at No. 1, folowed by Chris Li's 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 2. With losses at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, CMS' lead was cut to 3-2, leaving Settles and Arimilli as the final two Stags on court. Despite losing a tight first set where he fought back from two breaks of serve down, Settles raised his game for a convincing second set win, before getting the clinch on his fourth match point, at deuce, serving for the match. Arimilli then completed his 7-5, 7-5 win moments later to secure the 5-2 win for CMS.

In the nightcap, CMS earned the doubles point against Concordia by winning at the top two positions by 6-2, and 6-3 scores. Settles paired with Mareedu at the top spot, while Freer and Robinson played at No. 2. In singles, Mareedu once again put the Stags ahead 2-0, with his 6-4, 6-2 at No. 1. CUI's win at No. 4 singles cut CMS' lead in half, before Daniel Blackman earned a 7-6(5), 6-1 win at No. 6. This set up Robinson's clinch at No. 3, punctuated by a high backhand volley winner for a 7-5, 7-5 victory. Warren Pham capped off CMS' scoring with a 10-7 win in a third-set tiebreaker to give the Stags a 5-2 final margin.

CMS will be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 19 for two home matches against Whittier and Brandeis.
