Stags Cap Eventful Weekend with Wins Over No. 19 Mary Washington and No. 34 Christopher Newport

CLAREMONT, Calif. - No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis swept two ranked D3 opponents on Sunday, defeating No. 19 Mary Washington 7-2, and No. 34 Christopher Newport 7-2. The Stags completed a successful weekend of doubles play, using five teams to win all six doubles points in dual match play. CMS' top three pairs also competed on Friday in the 130th Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship, where they won six of nine main draw matches.

Three Stags earned both singles and doubles victories in the morning match against Mary Washington. Senior captain Julian Gordy (CMC) won at No. 1 doubles with partner Nikolai Parodi (CMC) and then got the singles clinch at No. 2  in straight sets. Junior captain Daniel Park (CMC) partnered sophomore Casey Morris (CMC) for CMS' first point of the day at No. 3 doubles, then came back with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 3 singles. Morris also had two wins, grinding out a first set tie-break before cruising to victory at No. 4 singles.

Gordy and Parodi were the only Stags to repeat as a doubles team in the afternoon match against Christopher Newport. After a slow start had them down a service break at 0-2, the Stags' top pair won eight of the next ten games to earn their third dual match win of the season. Park paired with Oscar Burney (CMC) at No. 2 doubles and the duo secured their second dual match win. Junior Jake Berber (CMC) and Jake Williams (HMC) debuted together at No. 3 doubles to begin the afternoon doubles sweep against CNU.

In singles against the Captains, sophomore Jack Katzman was a comfortable 6-1, 6-1 winner at the top position. Matthew Jacobs (CMC), Ethan Carroll (HMC), and Jake Williams (HMC) similarly yielded only two games at the No. 3,  No. 4 , and No. 5 positions, before Freddie Simental (HMC) completed the Stags' scoring with a straight set win at No. 6. CMS won two of five tie-breaks on the day, running their season total to 8-4.

In Friday's matches at the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in La Jolla, CMS was represented by Gordy and Parodi, Katzman and Liu, and Burney and Park. Katzman and Liu won three rounds, including impressive wins over UCSD's Higgins and Ruh in the opening round and UCLA's Periera and Zahraj in the third round.

CMS is now 4-0 overall and resumes dual match play on Sunday, March 10 against No. 33 Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 9 AM, before squaring off against Division I Quinnipiac at 3 PM, and then Division II Western New Mexico at 6 PM.
