CMS Men's Tennis Falls to Division II Point Loma 5-2

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Advik Mareedu picked up a dominant win at No. 1 singles, and Michael Hao added a three-setter at No. 4 to complete a singles-doubles sweep, but No. 21 Division II Point Loma was able to capture a 5-2 win over the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, CMS slides to 6-2 on the year, with the only other defeat coming to No. 2 Case Western at the ITA Indoor Championships last week, before the Stags bounced back to defeat No. 1 Chicago the following day. 

For the first time this season, CMS lost two of three doubles matches to yield the doubles point. First time pair Michael Hao and Matthew Robinson won a hard fought 7-5 decision at No. 2, with the Stags' No. 1 and 3 teams dropping tough 6-4 decsions.

Mareedu quickly leveled the match at  1-1 with a blistering 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, his fourteenth win in sixteen matches on the season. Point Loma then answered at No. 2 singles with a straight set win, giving the lead back to the Sea Lions. The next four positions all went to three sets, with CMS winning first sets at Nos. 3, 4, and 6.

Warren Pham had a match point at No. 6 singles in the third set, when he took his opponent to deuce receiving at 3-5, before eventually falling 7-6(1), 3-6, 7-5. Christian Settles stayed up a break for most of the third set and served for the match at 5-4, before yielding the final three games and the clinch for PLNU. Robinson also fell just short, remaining on serve until 5-6 in the third set before dropping a 1-6, 6-2, 7-5 decsion at No. 3. Senior captain Michael Hao earned the Stags' second point on his second victory of the day, a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win at the No. 4 position.

The Stags will be back in action when they co-host the Stag-Hen Invitational this weekend, beginning with a quarterfinal match against George Fox on Friday at 10 a.m.
