Jack Katzman Earns Third SCIAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Award

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Sophomore Jack Katzman earned the SCIAC Men's Athlete of the Week Award for the third time this season for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team, the league office announced today.

Katzman earned the honor this week after tallying a 6-0 record (3-0 singles, 3-0 doubles) in a span of 24 hours as the No. 1-ranked Stags defeated Caltech on Friday, and then took down Cal Lutheran and Division I UC Riverside on Saturday.

This week, Katzman picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles against 25th-ranked Caltech, and then won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 at Cal Lutheran on Saturday. He capped off his weekend with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 2 against the Division I Highlanders, helping CMS to a narrow 4-3 win as the only player to win in both singles and doubles for the Stags. His doubles scores on the weekend were 8-2 against both Caltech and Cal Lutheran (with Oscar Burney) and 7-5 against UC Riverside (with Robert Liu)

Katzman improved his personal singles record to 25-2 on the year, including a perfect 19-0 in dual matches (his only two losses were in the championships of fall tournaments) and his overall record in two seasons (both singles and doubles) to 98-21, two shy of reaching 100 wins before even finishing his sophomore year. Since coming back from the semester break, Katzman has dropped only one set, the opening set playing at No. 1 against RPI on March 10 before bouncing back to win in three, and hasn't a single set since since then (33 total) go past 6-4.

CMS has now won the SCIAC award a total of six times this season, led by the three from Katzman. Liu, junior Nikolai Parodi, and junior Daniel Park have each won it one time as well. 

The Stags now stand at 26-1 on the season and 6-0 in SCIAC play, extending their conference win streak to 130 matches since 2005, and can clinch another undefeated regular season in league play with a win at Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday evening, when Katzman can reach his 100th career win with a singles-doubles weep.
