Johns Hopkins provides a big test, but CMS moves on to semifinals

MASON, Ohio – Back in March when the No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team traveled to Johns Hopkins, CMS prevailed 7-2 and swept doubles. Fast forward two months and the two teams matched up again, this time with the season on the line in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championships and CMS prevailed again. This time, behind the strength of its singles play, CMS defeated Johns Hopkins 5-3 in a rain delayed match on May 18 at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.

The win over JHU puts CMS in the NCAA Division III national semifinals for the third year in a row. CMS faces the winner of the Emory vs. Washington University match in the semifinals on May 19 at 4 p.m. EST at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. Portions of the match can be watched live on the NCAA Live Video webpage.

With Monday's win over Johns Hopkins, CMS hit the 30-win mark for the third year in a row and they have equaled the best record in program history (30-2) and most wins (30).

Against Hopkins in doubles, unlike the first time the two squads faced off earlier in the season, Hopkins led 2-1 at the end of doubles. CMS' top doubles team of seniors Warren Wood (CMC) and Joe Dorn (CMC) quickly took care of Jeremy Dubin and Nicholas Garcia, 8-2. Johns Hopkins came back at No.2 and No. 3 doubles for a pair of 8-6 wins to lead 2-1 after doubles.

CMS came back in singles for the final four points of the match to secure the win. Other wins for CMS were by senior Nikolas Marino (CMC) at No. 3 singles (6-1, 6-2), Wood at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-2), Dorn at No. 4 singles (6-3, 7-6 (7-4)) and sophomore Glenn Hull (CMC) at No. 6 singles (6-3, 7-5). Hull's win clinched the match and sent CMS to the semifinals. Johns Hopkins double faulted serving to end the match and give Hull and CMS the win.
