On Court: Joins Stags Tennis after a decorated junior and high school career...ranked as high as #20 in Southern California Boys 18s, and #112 nationally on tennisrecruiting.net...played #1 singles for four years and was team captain for three at Francis Parker HS, where he led his team to one CIF title and three semifinals...also league individual CIF champion 2008-2010 and All San Diego Section 1st Team selection...as a freshman started strong at the USTA / ITA West Regionals, defeating 7th seed and national ITA Player To Watch  Deven Nerenberg (Santa Cruz) and 15th seed Sabel (Pomona-Pitzer), before losing in three sets to defending champion Nick Ballou of Cal Lutheran in the quarters...partnered fellow San Diegan freshman Cameron Bernhardt in the doubles, where the unseeded duo defeated teams from Chapman, Pomona-Pitzer, and Redlands to advance to the semis...finshed the fall with singles rankings of #45 nationally and #12 in the west, and a doubles ranking of #8 in the west...began the spring at #4 and #5 singles and #3 doubles (with Wei), winning his first three singles duals and two of three doubles duals...sat out nearly five weeks from Feb 25 to March 30 with Mono, then returned against #7 Middlebury...was the Stags' most consistent singles player, going 19-3 overall and 14-1 in duals...his three losses came at the hands of NCAA singles finalist Nick Ballou (twice) and Lunghino of Middlebury...partnered Wood at #1 and #2 doubles after starting the spring with Wei, going 9-7 in duals and 14-9 overall...Marino's 19-3 singles mark is good for the 5th best singles season winning percentage in Stags Tennis history...Marino also earned SCIAC Athlete of the Week honors the week of May 7-13, for his role in both of CMS' NCAA opening round victories...also named to 2nd Team All-SCIAC for his exceptional play at the #4 singles and #1 and #2 doubles positions during the regular season...as a sophomore continued his consistently strong play, moving up from #4 to #3 singles...reached the round of 16 at the USTA / ITA West Regionals after winning two singles matches, eventually falling in three sets to Santa Cruz's Halabi...lost in the first round of doubles with partner Mac Cahill...started strong in the spring, playing #1 singles on opening day and getting a straight set win against Arizona Christian...went on to win his first eight duals, playing mostly at the #3 spot...slower start on the doubles side, playing #2 doubles with new partner Alex Lane...the pair lost two of their first three duals before moving to #3 and then winning 18 of their next 19...Marino would prove to be one of the Stags most prolific performers in both singles and doubles, going 23-4 in singles duals, and 24-5 in doubles duals enroute to overall marks of 29-6 in singles and 26-7 in doubles...he also reached the Ojai singles semis, losing to eventual champ Nick Ballou of Cal Lutheran...was one of four Stags named to the All-SCIAC Team as a 2nd Team honoree...also an ITA Player To Watch nominee from the West Region...his outstanding play in both singles and doubles put him back in the CMS Stags Tennis records for the second straight year...his 35 singles matches played and 29 wins land him16th in the matches played category and third in wins for a single season...he now appears twice on the single season winning percentage list, in seventh place for his 2012 record of 19-3, and in tenth place for his 2013 record of 29-6...Marino and partner Alex Lane place seventh in singles season wins as a team with their 24-6 mark...as a junior spent fall semester in Copenhagen, Denmark as part of CMC's study abroad program...lost opening dual match at #2 singles to start the spring, but then reeled off ten straight wins at #2 and #3 without losing a set...first dual match loss was to UCLA's Mackenzie MacDonald, after Marino rolled an ankle at 4-all, thirty-all in the first...finished the match losing 6-4, 6-2, but had to miss the next 10 days...went on to win another nine singles dual matches consecutively without losing a set, before falling in straight sets in the NCAA team quarters to Hopkins' Tanner Brown...was 20-4 in singles dual matches...equally brilliant in tournament play, reaching the final of the D3 event at Ojai, where he defeated Cal Lu's Cardenas in the quarters and Whittier's Konstantinov in the semis, before losing to Wood in the championship...was one of four Stags to qualify for the NCAA singles tourney, where he advanced to the semis without the loss of more than four games in a set...fell to eventual champion Joey Fritz in the semis...partnered senior captain Pereverzin in doubles and played #2 and #3 all season, where the duo went 18-4 in duals...earned 1st Team All-SCIAC honors as well as ITA All-American singles honors...named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team...SCIAC Athlete of the Week for week of May 13...completed 2014 with overall records of 27-6 in singles and 18-5 in doubles and final rankings of #3 in the West and #7 nationally in singles, and #10 in the West with Perevezin in doubles...his 75 career singles wins place him in the 12th position all-time heading into his senior year...his singles records in his first three years are each among the fourteen best in CMS Tennis history in terms of winning percentage...as a senior entered the ITA West Regionals as the #2 seed in singles and advanced to the final without losing a set...lost to teammate Glenn Hull in the championship match, earning him fall singles rankings of #3 in the west and #10 nationally...paired with Wood in doubles as the top seeds in ITAs, advancing to the final where they lost in a tie-break in the third set...earned fall doubles rankings of #4 in the west and #12 nationally...returned in the spring to complete a record setting career by earning his highest single season win totals in both singles (33) and doubles (28) to lead CMS to their first team NCAA team title in 34 years...Marino's 33-4 mark in singles was good for 7th best winning percentage ever for a single season in Stags Tennis history, making him the first Stag player ever to appear in the top twenty in this category for every year of his career...earned year-end singles ra nkings of #9 in the west and #24 nationally...finishes his singles career with a 108-19 record and the best career winning percentage in program history...also fourth in matches played (127) and second in matches won (108)...his 28-13 mark in doubles for 2015 was good for 7th in matches played (41) and 16th in matches won (28), particularly impressive given that he played with four different partners (Wood, Yeh, Mehall, and Hull)...completes doubles career with 84-33 record, placing him in the top 10 in program history for matches played and won...earned 1st Team All-SCIAC honors for second straight year, ITA Scholar-Athlete honors (3.5 GPA and higher) for the fourth straight year, and Capital One Academic All-District Team for the second straight year...will be remembered as one of CMS Tennis' most focused and driven student-athletes, achieving at the most elite level on court and in the classroom, while leading his team to unprecedented success.
