Three days down, Stags sit in fifth at NCAA Championships

SHENANDOAH, Texas – With some strong individual performances and another relay record, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming & diving team is in fifth place with 160 points after the third day of the NCAA Division III Championships, March 20, at the Conroe ISD Natatorium.

In the consolation final of the 200-yard butterfly, senior Marc Blumberg became an honorable mention All-American with a time of 1:49.69, just off his morning prelim time of 1:49.24. Overall he finished in 12th place, fourth in the consolation final. His morning time just edged out his previous CMS record time set in 2013, by one one-hundredth of a second. Senior Patrick Shultz swam the 200 butterfly in 1:52.73 for a 31st place finish.

Sophomore Matthew Williams had the highest finish of the day for the Stags as he finished in fourth place in the championship final of the 100-yard backstroke. His All-American time of 48.38 was just under two-tenths of a second off from a podium finish.

In the 100-yard breastroke, junior Zach Alleva swam his way to 23rd place finish at 56.52.

The 800-yard freestyle relay wrapped up the third day of swimming for CMS and the team of junior Alex Poltash, sophomore Graham Spurzem, senior Cameron Whiting and Blumberg came up with an honorable mention All-American performance, as they finished in 11th at 6:41.15, another CMS record.
