2015 NCAA Division III Swimming & Diving Championships Preview

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – On March 3, the NCAA announced the participants for the 2015 Division III Swimming & Diving Championships which run from March 18-21 in Shenandoah, Texas, and 16 student-athletes (nine men, seven women) from Claremont-Mudd-Scripps have been invited. This is the second-straight year that CMS has sent representatives from both the women's team and the men's team to the NCAA Championships in the same year. The Athenas finished in 13th place at NCAAs last season while the Stags broke into the top-10 nationally, at 7th.

The 2015 NCAA Division III Championships are hosted officially by the City of Shenandoah and are going to be held at the CISD Natatorium. Athenas
Six swimmers and one diver are heading to Texas for the Athenas in 2015, led by its 200 and 400-yard medley relay teams. The 200-yard medley relay team of senior LillyBelle Deer, sophomore Stephanie Doi, freshman Lorea Gwo and sophomore Kelly Ngo swam the 11th fastest qualifying time (1.44.44) out of 29 entries.

In the 400-yard medley relay, Gwo, Ngo, sophomore Kayla Flaten and sophomore Emily McKinnon posted a time of 3:50.40, the 16th fastest time out of 33 qualifying teams.

Individual qualifiers for CMS are McKinnon (200-yard breastroke) and Ngo (100-yard backstroke). The duo's NCAA qualifying times rank 14th and 10th in their respective events. Ngo's time of 55.66 is a CMS record which she set this season.

On the boards, sophomore Maia Presti finished in third place out of 18 divers at NCAA Regionals in the 1-meter event with a score of 402.00 which qualified her for Nationals.

Stags
Eight swimmers and one diver are heading to Texas for the Stags in 2015. Of the five relays at the NCAA Championships, the Stags qualified for all five. In the 200-yard medley relay, junior Zach Alleva, junior Joseph Hinton, senior Patrick Shultz and sophomore Matthew Williams qualified with the 10th fastest time (1:30.59). CMS' 400 medley relay team (Alleva, Alex Poltash, Shultz and Williams), 800-yard freestyle relay team (Marc Blumberg, Poltash, Graham Spurzem and Cameron Whiting), 200-yard freestyle relay team (Hinton, Poltash, Shultz and Williams) and 400-yard freestyle relay team (Hinton, Poltash, Shultz and Williams) also qualified.

The Stags 400 medley relay team posted the eighth fastest time of the qualifying teams at 3:18.96. Eighth is the highest any of CMS' relay teams ranked.

Williams qualified in a team-high six events (200 medley relay, 200-yard freestyle relay, 400 medley relay, 100 back, 200-yard backstroke and 400-yard free relay) for the Stags during the week. His 100 back time of 49.08 ranks sixth in the field, while his 200 back time of 1:47.45 ranks fifth.   

Other individual swimmers who qualified for CMS are Shultz in the 100-yard butterfly (11th – 48.74) along with Whiting in the 500-yard freestyle (13th – 4:29.37) and 200-yard freestyle (12th – 1:39.35). All three times are CMS records that were set this season.

In diving, senior James Stevick (CMC) qualified for both the 1 and 3-meter boards. He won Regionals in the 1-meter event and finished second in the 3-meter dive. Stevick finished as the NCAA Division III 1-meter diving runner-up in 2013. He has won seven conference championships in diving (out of eight opportunities) during his four-year run with CMS.
