Bio

Megumi Abe joined the coaching staff at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps after studying chemistry at the California Institute of Technology before embarking on an epic quest to find her true calling. This has included stints as a management consultant at Bain & Company, taking on public education reform with Green Dot Public Schools, and most recently healthcare technology entrepreneurship with start-up Delta Brain Inc. Although she spent the majority of her childhood in chemistry lab, it became clear that she was not destined for academia when she realized that the best and most valuable part of her undergraduate experience was being on the cross country and track teams. Even while exploring other career paths, she remained as engaged as possible with collegiate athletics, mentoring student athletes, attending races and volunteering whenever she could. She is thrilled to be starting her first season coaching cross country at CMS, a program that she secretly admired since competing against.

Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Megumi enjoys road trips, writing, coffee and all things Boston sports teams. She may try to convince you that her real passions are politics, entrepreneurship and social justice issues, but running has always been a central part of her life. Though not particularly gifted athletically, she makes up for it with boundless enthusiasm, research and running as many miles as she can, in the most interesting places she can. Her most memorable runs have come from dodging formidable Sao Paulo traffic in Brazil in search of black swans, and getting hopelessly lost out in the moors of the English countryside, but her favorite place to run remains Topanga State Park with its vast network of challenging, hilly fire roads.
