Athenas Cross Country Finishes a Strong Second at The Master's Invitational

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. - Natalie Bitetti (second), Elle Marsyla (fifth) and Riley Capuano (sixth) each earned top-10 finishes as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's cross country team came in second place out of 16 teams at The Master's Invitational on Saturday morning.

Biola finished in first place with 33 points, with CMS close behind with 44 points. The Master's University was third with 78, followed by Pomona-Pitzer in fourth with 138 and Embry-Riddle in fifth with 147. 

Bitetti finished in 20:59.1 to finish second behind Hannah Fredericks of The Master's in 20:40.4. Marsyla finished in 21:16.1 for fifth place, with Capuano close behind in 21:20.0 to earn sixth. 

CMS also had five other runners earn top-30 finishes. Angie Gushue came in 16th with a time of 22:01.0, followed 1.6 seconds later by Laura Zimmer in 22:02.6, who was the fifth scorer for the Athenas.

Sara Wexler earned a top 20 finish (19th) in 22:08.2, while Revere Schmidt was 23rd in 22:19.1 and Sally Gaskell was 26th in 22:22.1, edging out her PR set last week at UC Riverside. Hannah Weaver was 33rd in 22:36.9, while Amelia Opsahl (23:08.9, 42nd) and Olivia DeBoer (23:23.8, 23:23.8) cracked the top 50 (out of 194 runners).

CMS will return to action in two weeks when the squad will be split in two locations, with some runners traveling to the Pre-Nationals in Pennsylvania, and others competing across Sixth Street at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
