Clarke, McVay Lead Women's Cross Country to Fourth-Place Finish at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Freshman Emily Clarke and sophomore Jackie McVay earned top 20 finishes to lead the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's cross country team to a fourth-place finish at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday morning.

Clarke (pictured) was the top finisher for the Athenas, crossing the line in 23:30.3 in the 6K race to end in 18th place. McVay was right behind her in 19th place with a 23:39.4 to come in second on the team. 

Sophomore Sophia Liles was the 26th place finisher to come in third on CMS with a time of 23:50.6. The Athenas then had a wave of three straight finishers, as freshman Brooklyn Button (23:53.0) and freshman Chloe Taylor (23:56.0) were the fourth and fifth scorers on the team, finishing 29th and 30th, respectively, while sophomore Samantha Baker was 31st in 24:02.0. 

Sophomore Olivia Gleason (37th), junior Laura Fleming (43rd) and senior Olivia Palenscar (49th) added top 50 finishes for the Athenas in the field of 127 runners. 

Host Pomona-Pitzer finished in first place in the event overall with 48 points, followed by CSU San Bernardino and Vanguard in the second and third positions. CMS was followed by Redlands, La Verne and Caltech in the 5-7 spots, with Westmont, Chapman and Whittier rounding out the top 10. 

CMS will be back in action next week when it travels to the CSU San Marcos Cougar Challenge, its final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships on Oct. 27 at Prado Park.
