Athenas Water Polo Rolls Past Occidental for Road SCIAC Win

EAGLE ROCK, Calif. – Isabel Del Villar had five goals, Mia Adsen and Cooper McKenna each had three and Grace Clark had two goals and four assists as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team defeated Occidental 22-3 in a road SCIAC game on Wednesday evening at the De Mandel Aquatics Center.

With the win, CMS improves to 13-8 on the year and raises its record to 5-1 in the SCIAC at the midway point of the conference schedule.

CMS surrendered the first goal on Occidental's opening possession, but then scored 13 in a row to take a 13-1 lead early in the second half. The Athenas had five in the first quarter, and then outscored the Tigers 7-0 in the second quarter to take a 12-1 lead into intermission.

Adsen tied the score up on the next CMS possession and after a turnover, McKenna scored to give CMS the lead for good. Mason Spencer had a save on the next possession, and Adsen scored her second on a penalty shot and McKenna followed with her second to make it 4-1 just three minutes into the game.

Elise Power tallied the final goal of the first quarter, and the Athenas then scored seven times in the eight-minute second. Clark scored the first two 36 seconds apart, Valerie Wraith and Dara Schoolcraft netted their first, Power scored her second, and Del Villar and Cassandra Ruedy capped off the half with goals to make it 12-1 going into the break.

Ruedy, McKenna, Power, and Clark all had two goals, and Caitlin Muñoz and Tonanxochitl Ortega each added goals as well.

CMS will be back in action when it returns home to host Redlands on Saturday at 11 a.m.
