CMS Women's Water Polo Takes 18-12 Road Win over Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. - Grace Clark had three goals and three assists, and Mia Adsen and Valerie Wraith each added three goals and two assists as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team pulled away in the second half for an 18-12 road win over Chapman on Saturday.

With the win, CMS improves to 9-7 on the season and gets back level in the SCIAC at 1-1 after falling in overtime in its opener to Pomona-Pitzer on Wednesday night.

Chapman hung tough and was still within 13-10 after scoring the first goal of the fourth quarter, but CMS used a 3-0 run in a span of 1:01 to essentially salt the game away. Olivia Cairns scored to stretch the lead to four with 6:08 remaining, and was followed 20 seconds later by a goal from Dara Schoolcraft, and then Cooper McKenna added one to make it 16-10 with 5:07 left.

CMS led just 7-6 at the half, but Cairns and Schoolcraft started the second half with goals to push the lead to 9-6. Clark answered a Chapman goal, and then Adsen had two goals 31 seconds apart to make it 12-8 with 2:01 left in the third.

The Athenas were down 5-3 in the second quarter, but put together a 4-0 run to take the lead for good, with McKenna, Wraith, Adsen and Clark scoring in succession to put CMS ahead 7-5.

Adsen led CMS with three steals, and Cassandra Ruedy tied Clark for team-high honors with assists with three.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Cal Lutheran for a 4 p.m. contest.
