CMS Women's Water Polo Uses Big Scoring Runs for 16-7 Win at Caltech

PASADENA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team used a pair of 7-0 runs to take a 16-7 road win over Caltech on Wednesday evening at Braun Pool.

With the win, CMS moves to 12-8 overall and stays perfect in the SCIAC at 6-0. Caltech falls to 3-11 overall and 0-6 in league play.

Isabel Del Villar had three goals to lead the Athenas, while Caitlin Muñoz had two goals and two assists, and Olivia Cairns, Jessi Beyer, Grace Clark and Ka'imi Duncklee each scored twice.

Caltech put up a strong battle in the first quarter, holding a 3-2 lead at one point, before Duncklee and Cassandra Reudy closed out the opening frame with back-to-back goals to give the Athenas a 4-3 lead heading into the second.

CMS then kept the momentum going as Clark scored her second of the game and Del Villar had two straight goals to extend the run to five goals and make it a 7-3 game. Muñoz and Beyer added two more to stretch the lead to 9-3 at the break.

Caltech scored the first goal of the second half, but CMS rattled off seven in a row in the third quarter to stretch its lead to 16-4 heading into the fourth. Del Villar started the run with her third, which was followed by Cairns, Duncklee, Muñoz, Kaitlyn Kong, Beyer and a second from Cairns. Caltech outscored CMS 3-0 in the fourth to make the final score 16-7.

CMS will be back in action at home on Saturday when it hosts Whittier at 11 a.m. at Axelrood Pool.
