CMS Women's Water Polo Dominates Chapman 19-5, Moves to 4-0 in SCIAC



CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team started slow, but turned it up several notches as the match went on and captured a 19-5 win over Chapman on Saturday morning at Axelrood Pool.

Cooper McKenna had four goals and two assists to lead the CMS offense, while Grace Clark had a hat trick, as the Athenas move to 4-0 in SCIAC with the win. 

The score was tied 2-2 late in the first quarter, before Fiona Murphy gave CMS the lead for good with 29 seconds in the first, and then McKenna beat the clock with three seconds left on a long outlet pass from goalie Natalie Stearns

McKenna and Christina Kulick closed out the half with goals to give the Athenas a 7-3 lead at the break, and Mia Adsen and Clark started the second half with goals to make it 9-3. Isabel Del Villar, McKenna Clark then scored three goals in quick succession in the final 1:23 of the third to make it a 12-4 CMS lead going into the fourth. 

The Athenas tacked on seven more goals in the final frame, as Ka'imi Duncklee had two, sandwiched around a goal from Kaitlyn Kong, and Jessi Beyer, Olivia Cairns, and Alicia Krasner finished off the game with the final three goals. 

Stearns had seven saves in the first half, and Mason Spencer had six in the second half to lead the CMS defense, while Cairns had a team-high three steals. 

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Occidental for a 7 p.m. contest.
