CMS Women's Water Polo Celebrates Senior Day with Overtime Win over La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Emma Brezoczky, one of the six seniors on the CMS women's water polo team who honored before the game for Senior Day, scored the game-winning goal in sudden death overtime as the Athenas took a 12-11 win over La Verne on Saturday at Axelrood Pool.

The win improves CMS to 11-2 in the SCIAC, and ties the program record for SCIAC wins in a season, set by the 2018 team. The Athenas can also now secure the second seed in the league tournament with a win at Whittier on Wednesday.

La Verne tied the score at 9-9 with 3:08 left in regulation on a goal from Dani D'Andrea and neither team could score before the 32 minutes were up. CMS broke the ice with 20 seconds left in the first overtime session on a goal from Emily McElroy, and then pulled ahead by two goals at the 2:31 mark of the second overtime when Christina Kulick scored, and seemed to be in good shape after earning a stop.

However, La Verne got the ball back, and D'Andrea scored two goals 21 seconds apart, getting a steal in between to trigger a breakaway to tie the score back up at 11-11. The Leopards had a chance to win at the end of the second overtime, but Jessica Salaz saved a shot that hit off the post and stayed on the line, but didn't quite cross.

Maddy Menard won the opening sprint of the sudden-death overtime session, and with the shot clock winding down, Brezoczky was able to get free in front of the cage and lob a shot over La Verne goalie Kate Carlyle and in for the game-winner.

Mia Adsen led CMS with three goals, while Brezoczky, Kulick, Elisa Power and Cooper McKenna each had two. Kulick also added a team-high three assists, while Salaz had five steals to go with her six saves.

Brezoczky, Natalie Clark, Ruth Efe, McElroy, Menard and Salaz were honored prior to the game for their final collegiate regular season home contest. They can assure themselves another game at Axelrood Pool, though, with a road win in their next contest at Whittier on Wednesday evening.
