CMS Women's Water Polo Falls to Two Division I Teams at Bruno Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - A day after opening its season with a 14-4 win over Austin College, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team found itself facing two Division I foes and came up on the short end of a 12-6 defeat to Marist and a 9-4 defeat to host Brown on the second day of the Bruno Classic.

CMS now stands at 1-2 on the young season, before closing out the three-day tournament tomorrow morning against a third Division I foe in Bucknell.

In the first match of the day against Marist, CMS hung tough in the first half, heading into intermission down just 6-5. However, the Red Foxes outscored the Athenas 6-1 in the third, and neither team scored in the fourth as Marist prevailed 12-6.

Sophomore Natalie Clark helped keep CMS close in the first quarter, scoring both of the CMS goals to make it a 4-2 game after the first eight minutes. The Athenas had a strong start to the second quarter, as junior Amelia Ayala scored 19 seconds in to make it 4-3, and first-year Jessi Beyer found the net to tie the score at 4-4.

Brown scored the next two goals to take a 6-4 lead, but sophomore Addi Duvall found the net with 57 seconds left to pull CMS within one at the break. Marist started the second half on a 4-0 run, before first-year Christina Kulick scored to make it a 10-6 game, but the Athenas could come no closer as Viktoria Orlova scored all of her match-high three goals in the third quarter.

The nightcap saw Brown jump out to a 3-0 lead in the first 4:13 and the Athenas were unable to mount a comeback. Sophomore Emma Brezoczky scored with 46 seconds left in the first to make it a 3-1 game, but Brown answered with a goal from Carissa Perez with eight seconds left to make it 4-1. Senior Aracelia Aldrete scored the first goal of the seconds quarter with 6:49 left to make it 4-2, but Brown took a 6-2 lead into the break and extended it 7-2 before Duvall scored with 2:48 left in the third.

Kulick scored her second goal of the day with 3:44 left to make it an 8-4 lead, but that was the last time the Athenas could find the net, as Brown capped off a 9-4 win on the fifth goal from Claire Pisani.

After concluding the Bruno Classic tomorrow against Bucknell, which starts at 9:15 a.m. Eastern time (6:15 a.m. Pacific), CMS will have two weeks off before returning to action at the Redlands Invitational on Feb. 15, where it will take on UC San Diego and Ottawa.
