Women's Water Polo Pastes Caltech in 17-3 Victory

PASADENA, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team cruised to a 17-3 victory over the Caltech Beavers on Saturday morning. Nine different Athenas scored in the victory with Jessica Gaffney (CMC), Anna Fry (HMC), and Chandlyr Denaro (CMC) leading the offense for CMS by each scoring at least three goals.

The Athenas outshot the Beavers 28-16 in the victory.

Chandlyr Denaro and Amelia Ayala (CMC) split time in goal. Ayala made four saves and collected four steals while Denaro made one save and stole two passes.

Anna Fry got Saturday's game started with two goals in the first two minutes to give CMS an early 2-0 lead. Jessica Gaffney added her first tally less than a minute later before Caltech got on the board for the first time.

After the Beavers' goal midway through the opening period the Athenas scored six-straight goals to take a 9-1 lead. Six different Athenas scored goals on the run, but Caltech's Katie Johnston ended the CMS momentum just before the half with a goal in the final minute of the period to make it a 9-2 CMS advantage heading into the half.

The Athenas went on another six-goal scoring streak to start the second-half to push their run to 12-1 over a 20 minute stretch. During this second scoring streak, Gaffney and Denaro each tallied two goals for CMS while Haley Gibbs (SC) and Fry each scored once.

After the Beavers scored the first goal of the fourth period, CMS ended the match with goals from Christine Hu (CMC) and Denaro in the final four minute of the game to close out the 17-3 victory.

The win moves CMS to 14-8 overall and 7-2 in the SCIAC. The Athenas will be back in the pool on Wednesday when they host the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 7:00 p.m. in Axelrood Pool.
