
Athenas not able to contain Division I Hawaii
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team had a tough time competing with the high-powered offense of the University of Hawaii, falling 20-3 in its first home match of the season.
Hawaii went up 5-0 in the first quarter before sophomore scoring leader Jessica Gaffney (CMC) netted the first CMS goal. UH regained their five goal advantage with 17 seconds left for a 6-1 lead after one.
The Athenas were shut out in the second and third quarters and surrendered nine more goals for a 14-1 deficit heading into the fourth.
Following a Femke Aan man-advantage goal to start the final quarter, sophomore Roxy Kiessling (CMC) scored her third of the season for CMS followed a couple minutes later by sophomore Helen Thomason's (SCR) first as the Athenas trailed 16-3.
Hawaii added four more to close it out and walk away with a 20-3 victory.
CMS (1-3) will next play a pair of matches on Feb. 27 vs. Whittier and Cal St. Monterey Bay, both at Whittier College.
