
Season underway with win at Whittier Mini-tournament
WHITTIER, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team started the 2016 campaign off with a win over Concordia (9-5) in the Whittier Mini-tournament on Saturday. Also this weekend, the Athenas lost to Azusa Pacific (10-3) in the mini-tournament and the traveled to Long Beach St. and lost 20-5 on Sunday.
In the win, sophomore Jessica Gaffney (CMC) scored four of the team's nine goals, three of which were scored in the fourth quarter. When Concordia got within one goal of the Athenas, Gaffney scored twice and freshman Kaitlyn Eng (HMC) added one while the CMS defense played tough. Also scoring in the game was Roxy Kiessling (CMC), Tess van Hulsen (CMC) and Claire Baxter (CMC).
Against APU and Long Beach, CMS totaled eight goals. Junior Ellen Perfect (CMC) put CMS on the board three times while Gaffney, van Hulsen accounted for two and Kiessling added one.
Over the weekend, goalies Alex Maser (CMC) and Mariah Mastrodimos (SCR) split time in the cage.
Head coach Greg Lonzo was enthused about the team's competitive spirit on the grueling opening weekend. He said, "we made good steps forward with this year's small, young team."
The Athenas are not in action for a few weeks and then host No. 6 Hawaii on Feb. 25 at 7 p.m.
