Scoring drought costs CMS in SCIAC Championships semifinal loss to Whittier
CLAREMONT, Calif. – A 12-plus minute scoring drought for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team ended up being too much for CMS to overcome as CMS lost 8-6 to Whittier in the semifinals of the SCIAC Championships on April 25 at Haldeman Pool. The loss sends CMS to the third place match against Chapman on Sunday, April 26 at 1 p.m. Live video for the third place match can be watched on the SCIAC Video Portal.
The scoreless streak for CMS that spanned from late in the first quarter all the way until the midpoint of the third quarter ended up being the game-changer, as CMS fell to Whittier Saturday, just over two weeks after beating Whittier in Whittier during the regular season.
Both teams traded scores in the first quarter as Whittier scored first and CMS tied it at 1-1 with 2:55 remaining in the first quarter on a goal by LillyBelle Deer (CMC). Whittier then came back and made it 2-1 with just under a minute to go in the first. Then Deer scored her second goal of the quarter with 17 seconds left which made it 2-2.
Deer's second goal of the first quarter would be the last score for CMS until 3:54 left in the third quarter when senior utility Haley Conner (CMC) scored and by then, Whittier led 6-2.
The match got exciting though in the fourth quarter as CMS stormed back and moved within a goal at 7-6 after back-to-back goals by freshman attacker Jessica Gaffney (CMC), the second goal with 1:44 left in regulation.
Whittier's Arlin De La Mora scored 18 seconds later to make it a two-score lead for Whittier as they would go on to win and advance to Sunday's championship match. Gaffaney and Deer each scored two goals to lead CMS while three players scored two goals for Whittier.
Senior goalie Allison Hu (CMC) reached double-digit saves for CMS with 10.
