Candace Filippelli scores overtime game-winner in SCIAC opener vs. Chapman

CLAREMONT, Calif. – With just 18 seconds gone by in sudden victory overtime, senior utility Candace Filippelli scored the game-winner to give the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team a 14-13 win over Chapman in the SCIAC opener March 19 at Axelrood Pool. The win is the fourth in the last five matches for CMS who improve to 9-10 overall, 1-0 in SCIAC.

CMS trailed 12-10 with 4:10 left in regulation after Chapman's Miranda Estrella found the back of the net. Just under 30 seconds later, Candace Filippelli narrowed the Chapman lead to 12-11. Senior driver Alex Toohey then forced overtime with her sixth goal of the match at the 1:53 mark of the fourth quarter.

In the first overtime period with seven seconds left, Chapman (5-12) moved ahead on a goal by Emily Holmquist. Then in the second overtime, CMS senior driver Alyssa Filippelli evened the score at 13-13 to force sudden death overtime and set up Candace Filippelli's game-winner which came off an assist from Toohey.

The match began well for CMS as they jumped out to a 3-0 first quarter lead, only to see Chapman battle back and take a 6-5 lead into the halftime break.

Toohey led CMS with six goals while Alyssa Filippelli had four scores and Candace Filippelli added two scores. Chapman was led by four goals from Estrella.

CMS is back in action on March 25 vs. Brown at Axelrood Pool.
