From Start To Finish Athenas Lead In Win Over La Verne

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team led from start to finish as they defeated La Verne 14-7 on Friday night at Pasadena City College on the first day of the SCIAC Championships. With the win, top-ranked and top-seeded CMS advanced to the second round of the SCIAC Championships to face Redlands on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Athenas are now 14-14 overall. CMS and Redlands have faced off twice in 2013 with both games going to CMS, most recently a 6-5 win at Redlands on April 10.

Three different players each scored a goal for CMS in the first three minutes of the game as the team took a 3-0 lead. La Verne then answered with a pair of goals as they narrowed the score to 3-2 with 1:32 remaining in the first quarter which is as close as La Verne would get. The Athenas then ran off six of the next seven goals of the half as they built a 9-3 halftime lead. When junior utility Candace Filippelli scored at the 4:19 mark of the first quarter, the Athenas had their largest lead of the game at 13-3.

Sophomore utility Haley Conner and junior driver Alex Toohey each had four goals for CMS while Ryanne Bible had three scores for La Verne.
