Third Quarter Propels CMS To Win

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team won Saturday 10-9 against California Lutheran University at Axelrood Pool. The win keeps the Athenas perfect in conference play at 4-0 and 10-13 overall.

After a highly contested first half that saw the score knotted at 4-4, the Athenas would erupt for five goals in the third.  CMS was lead by the play of junior utility Candace Filippelli who scored three goals in less than two minutes and finished the day with a total of five.  Haley Conner and Jeanne Kelber would also contribute goals in the third.

The Regals would not go away quietly as they scored three goals in the last two minutes of the match, but the Athenas would hold on for the victory. Sophomore goalie Allison Hu was strong in the goal with numerous blocks at critical times throughout the game.

The Athenas will be back at Axelrood Pool this afternoon at 2 PM for their annual alumni game. They will continue conference play Wednesday, April 10th, as they travel to Redlands for 5 PM match.
