Women's Water Polo Posts 3-1 Record Over The Weekend At Cal Lu Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's water polo team posted a 3-1 record over the weekend at the two-day Posada Royale Invitational hosted by Cal Lutheran.The Athenas registered wins over Fresno Pacific, Azusa Pacific and Cal Lutheran, and have now won four of their last five matches overall.

Day 1
The Athenas won two games Friday, defeating a pair of NAIA schools in Fresno Pacific and Azusa Pacific.

In Friday's win 12-7 win over Fresno Pacific, the Athenas were led by juniors Alex Toohey with four goals and Candace Filippelli with three. Sophomore Rose Koper added two goals while junior Alyssa Filippelli added one, and sophomore LillyBelle Deer and senior Jeanne Kelber scored their first goals of the season. The game featured strong performances by both goalies as junior Taylor Basso recorded five saves as did sophomore goalie Allison Hu, each played a half of the game.

The Athenas added a second victory for the tournament on Friday 18-10 over Azusa Pacific University. Toohey led the scoring with five goals, followed by the Filippelli sisters (Alyssa and Candace) with four goals each. Freshman Rachel Burgess tallied two goals, and freshman Emily Gran, Koper and Kelber each scored a goal.  Both goalies were again outstanding splitting time and both notching four saves apiece in the game.

Day 2
Facing SCIAC opponent California Lutheran in a pre-conference match-up, the Athenas continued with another win on Saturday, this time an 11-9 win, making it their fourth win a row. Toohey and Candace Filippelli led the way again, with five and three goals, respectively, while sophomore Haley Conner, Gran and Kelber each added a goal. Hu led the way with eight first-half saves while Basso had three saves in the second half.  

In the fourth and final game of the tournament against California Baptist University, the Athenas struggled to convert opportunities and came up short 16-9. Candace Filippelli had a team high four goals. Teammates  in freshman Rachel Burgess, Alyssa Filippelli, Gran, Kelber, and Toohey all added a goal each.  Goalies Basso and Hu both had five saves in the game.

In all, nine Athenas contributed to the goals scored during the weekend with Toohey and Candace Filippelli leading the way with 15 and 14 goals, respectively.
 
This weekend's schedule features the Claremont Convergence Tournament, hosted by CMS and Pomona-Pitzer. The Athenas battle Cal Baptist at 12:40 p.m. and then No. 10 Indiana University at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 8. Saturday's match-ups have the Athenas facing VMI at 10:20 a.m. and No. 17 UC San Diego at 2:20 p.m. All four games will be at Axelrood Pool.
