CMS Volleyball Moves to 6-0 in SCIAC with Quick Sweep of Cal Lutheran

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – Jenna Holmes had 15 kills in 29 attempts with only one error, hitting .483, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team moved to 6-0 in conference play with a straight set win over Cal Lutheran on Friday night.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-13, 25-10 as CMS moved to 12-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play, extending its win streak to 55 in SCIAC-sponsored matches (49 straight league matches, and six in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament). The Athenas also have now won all six league matches in straight sets this season, and have dropped only one set in the last 24 matches against SCIAC teams, dating back to the start of last year.

After Cal Lutheran won the opening point of the match, CMS went on a 9-0 run to take control of the first set, with Brooke McKee contributing three kills during the stretch. Two straight Holmes service aces made it 19-10, and Holmes finished off a 25-18 win with a kill to give CMS the 1-0 lead.

In the second set, Cal Lutheran hung close through the early going before CMS used a 6-0 run to turn a 10-8 lead into a 16-8 advantage. Holmes had two kills during the spurt, and Georgia McGovern added a service ace, before CMS went on to take it 25-13.

The Athenas once again opened up a big margin in the middle of the third set, turning a 10-7 advantage into a 16-8 lead. Audrey Sawyer had a kill and back-to-back aces to make it 13-7, and after Cal Lutheran got one point back, Holmes had two kills in a 3-0 run to stretch the lead to eight. Dede Carranza had two straight service aces to push the lead to 22-10, McKee and Solvej Eversoll combined on a block to make it 24-10, and McKee ended it with a kill.

McKee finished with 12 kills for CMS, while McGovern had 36 assists and 11 digs. Carranza paced the defense with 16 digs.

The Athenas will be back in action tomorrow when they host Whittier for a 4 p.m. contest at Roberts Pavilion.
