Dede Carranza Earns SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week for CMS Volleyball

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Dede Carranza, the reigning SCIAC Defensive Player of the Year, picked up where she left off a year ago by winning the first SCIAC Defensive Player of the Week honor of the 2023 season, the conference office announced today.

Carranza helped CMS get off to a 3-0 start on the young season with three wins at the Pacific Coast Classic, defeating Carthage 3-0, Wisconsin-Eau Claire 3-1 and Southwestern (Texas) 3-2. 

In the Southwestern match, Carranza came through with 31 digs, her first 30-dig effort since the 2021 NCAA Tournament as a first-year. She ended the weekend with 64 digs, an average of 5.33 per set, and had 47 serve receptions with only one error. 

CMS will be back in action this weekend when it hosts the East-West Battle at Roberts Pavilion, which will feature two courts of action on Friday and Saturday. The Athenas will face WashU on Friday evening at 6 p.m., and then face Trinity (Texas) on Saturday at 11:30 p.m. and Johns Hopkins on Saturday at 6 p.m.
