CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team and men's soccer teams will host their respective SCIAC Championship games back-to-back on Saturday, when the Athenas holding their first serve at 4 p.m. at Roberts Pavilion against Chapman and the Stags kicking off against Redlands at 7 p.m. at Pritzlaff Field.
The volleyball team advanced through to the championship match yesterday with a four-set semifinal win over La Verne, dropping the first set 26-24 and then bouncing back to win the final three in lopsided fashion (25-15, 25-17, 25-13). The men's soccer team also won its semifinal at home on Wednesday, defeating Occidental 2-0 behind goals from William Birchard and Ethan Tyng four minutes apart in the second half.
The Athenas come in to the championship game ranked No. 5 in the nation with a 25-3 record and will be trying to win the SCIAC Postseason Tournament Championship for the third year in a row. CMS has made the championship match for eight straight years, but for the first time in that stretch, it will not play Cal Lutheran in the finals as the Regals fell to Chapman in five sets yesterday. Chapman and CMS split during the regular season, with the Panthers winning a 3-2 decision at home on Oct. 1, coming back from a 2-0 deficit, and the Athenas taking the rematch at Roberts Pavilion 25-12, 26-24, 25-12 on Oct. 19.
The Stags are currently ranked No. 13 nationally in the latest United Soccer Coaches Division III poll, and stand at 13-3-2 on the season after their semifinal win on Wednesday. Both of their ties this season have come against Redlands, a 2-2 draw at Pritzlaff Field on Oct. 2 and a 0-0 tie at Redlands on Oct. 26. CMS twice came back from one-goal deficits in the first meeting, with first-year Ben Pelz tying the score 1-1 and junior Daniel Rohde knotting it 2-2 when his bicycle kick deflected in with just under five minutes remaining in regulation.
CMS has already captured two SCIAC fall championships, after the men's and women's cross country teams swept the titles last weekend at the Pomona-Pitzer Cross Country Course. The men's water polo team will also be in contention for its SCIAC title, when the postseason tournament gets underway Nov. 19-21.
