CMS has another record year in the Directors’ Cup standings

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletics is ranked third in the 2017-18 Division III Learfield Directors’ Cup standings, the program’s highest finish ever. This is the second-straight year that CMS has finished in the top-5 in the country.

For the 10th-straight year and 30th time in program history, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athletic Department claimed the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference’s Combined All-Sports Trophy. The Athenas earned 94 points this season and won the All-Sports Trophy on the women’s side by a 19-point margin, claiming their eighth-straight and 23rd overall. The Stags finished third in the standings on the men’s side with 65.5 points. Pomona-Pitzer won the men’s All-Sports Trophy.

It is hard to write much more after the above headlines of this year’s recap – that pretty much says it all! The 2017 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas volleyball team climbed to the pinnacle of NCAA women’s volleyball by capturing the Division III National Championship. It was an inspired squad that swept Wittenberg University 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) on a rainy Saturday evening at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

After winning the first five rounds of the 2017 NCAA Tournament by scores of 3-1, the Athenas finally put their foot down and completed a 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-22) sweep of the Wittenberg Tigers to win their first National Championship. It was a heavyweight battle all night long, but it was the Athenas that held the upper hand throughout the match. Margaux Arntson (CMC) was a force to be reckoned with and the Tigers had no answer for the senior opposite. Arntson delivered 18 kills on a .519 hitting percentage to lead the Athenas to victory while earning Tournament Most Valuable Player honors in the process.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Athenas defeated Ithaca College 3-1 (25-23, 23-25, 25-21, 25-18) to advance to Saturday's National Championship match against the winner of Calvin vs. Wittenberg. Four different Athenas collected multiple kills in the National Semifinal victory.

After a thrilling weekend in Texas, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team is one of only eight teams remaining in the country. The Athenas continue their NCAA Tournament run on Thursday in Grand Rapids, Mich. with a meeting against the Gustavus Adolphus Golden Gusties at 3:00 p.m. ET/12:00 p.m. PT. The winner of the CMS-Gustavus Adolphus match will take on the winner of Emory-Ithaca in the National Semifinals on Friday.

The No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Athenas take a little time to get acclimated to a new match. One set to be exact. For the fourth-straight time, the Athenas dropped the opening set in an NCAA Tournament match before coming from behind to win the match 3-1. On Thursday afternoon, it was the No. 16 Gustavus Adolphus Golden Gusties that took a set off the Athenas but CMS prevailed for a 3-1 (16-25, 25-17, 25-16, 25-14) victory in the National Quarterfinals.

On Tuesday morning the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced their All-American teams with three Athenas being honored. Margaux Arntson (CMC) became the first-ever First Team All-American in CMS women’s volleyball history. Mikena Werner (SC) was named to the Second Team for the second-straight season while Clara Madsen (CMC) earned an honorable mention nod.

At the beginning of the weekend the Georgetown Regional was touted as the toughest pod in the NCAA Tournament. After seven matches over three days, the Regional lived up to the hype. No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps edged No. 1 Colorado College in a 3-1 (21-25, 25-17, 25-17, 26-24) instant classic to claim the Regional Title and advance to the National Quarterfinals.

Moving On: Athenas Get Past Pirates, Advance to Regional Final

The No. 6 Claremont- Mudd-Scripps Athenas are moving on the Georgetown Regional Final after defeating the No. 5 Southwestern Pirates 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-14) on Saturday afternoon. It was an edge-of-your-seat battle the entire way through, but in the end, the Athenas prevailed and will square off with No. 1 Colorado College on Sunday with a trip to the National Quarterfinals on the line. Led by Margaux Arntson’s (CMC) 13 kills, the Athenas put together one of their more balanced attacks of the season with five different players collecting at least 10 kills. Clara Madsen (CMC), Phoebe Madsen (CMC), and Mikena Werner (SC) all tallied double-doubles in the match.

Athenas Advance to Second Round, Edge Texas-Dallas

It was back and forth all match long, but the No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s volleyball team edged the Texas-Dallas Comets 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-15, 25-23) in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon. Margaux Arntson (CMC) led the Athenas’ offense with 16 kills in the match. Isabelle Taylor (CMC) was a force to be reckoned with on both offense and defense. She finished the contest with 11 kills and 11 digs for one of only two double-doubles in the match. Clara Madsen (CMC) registered the other, finishing with 29 assists and 13 digs for the Athenas.

Just a day before the No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women’s volleyball team takes the floor in the NCAA Regionals, four Athenas were named All-West Region by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA). Margaux Arntson (CMC) led the group with her West Regional Player of the year honors. Joining Arntson on the All-Region team were classmates, Clara Madsen (CMC) and Mikena Werner (SC). Shelbi Stein (CMC) joined the trio with an Honorable Mention nod.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team is making their fifth-straight trip to the NCAA Tournament and ninth appearance in program history. This year's journey begins in Georgetown, Texas on the campus of Southwestern University with one of the toughest regionals in the country. The grouping features eight teams with four squads ranked in the top six in the most recent AVCA National Rankings.

On Monday morning, the NCAA released the field for the 64-team Women’s Volleyball Championships and the bracket has the Athenas traveling to Georgetown, Texas for the opening rounds of the tournament.
