Rigg & Athenas blow by No. 21 La Verne

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After yesterday's loss to 3-2 Southwestern, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team entered Saturday night's match against La Verne with something to prove. The Athenas won in straight sets and improved as the game wore on: 25-23, 25-17, 25-10. For CMS, sophomore Mariah Rigg (CMC) hit .545 without an error on the night.

In the first set, CMS consistently trailed by two or three points until tying the game at 21-21 on back-to-back kills by sophomores Sarah Bruml (SCR) and Crystal Anderson (CMC). Rigg then earned two of the final three points on kills for the Athenas, securing the 25-23 set win.

CMS jumped out to a 14-8 lead with three early kills by Anderson. She would record six kills in the set including the final point. Sophomore setter Clara Madsen (CMC) had 21 assists in the match and also was second in digs with 10 for her eighth double-double of the season.

With a two set advantage, CMS carried all the momentum into the third, and ultimately final, set. The Leos were unable to string together two scores until their ninth and 10^th points late in the set. In the meantime, CMS continued the offensive onslaught recording 10 kills in the set. Rigg owned three of those and slammed down the last point in a set for the second time on the night.

The Athenas' offense presented a balanced attack with Shelbi Stein (CMC) leading with nine kills followed by Anderson with eight and Kerkhof with seven.

Next up for the Athenas (18-5, 8-2 SCIAC) is Whittier (14-8, 5-5 SCIAC) on the road on Oct. 20. And then return home to host No. 6 Cal Lutheran (20-3, 10-2) on Oct. 23 at 7:30 p.m.
