Split for CMS on second day of Pacific Coast Classic

CLAREMONT, Calif. – After two wins on Friday, the No. 8 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team came up against a tough opponent in No. 11 Carthage College, losing 3-2 (23-25, 25-18, 25-13, 16-25, 15-9) and then handily beat Puget Sound 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-9).

The match against Carthage was the first of the day in the Linde Activities Center and filled the gym with playoff energy. Both teams had gone 2-0 in straight sets the previous day with CMS beating NYU and Pacific and Carthage taking Puget Sound and La Verne.

The Athenas took the first game of the set and then struggled in the second and third. In the fourth set, CMS hit .400 as a team and held the Lady Reds to a mere .185. With the match tied up 2-2, they went into a fifth set. Carthage took the momentum with an early lead and was able to hold onto it for the win.

In the match, junior outside hitter Nicole Kerkhof (CMC) led the Athenas with 16 kills followed closely by sophomore Shelbi Stein (CMC) at 12.

For Carthage, Stephanie Korbakes had six blocks and also added 16 kills.

Against Puget Sound in the nightcap, the Athenas were carried by Kerkhof who did not record a hitting error all match and recorded 21 kills in just three sets. Sophomore libero Mikena Werner (SCR) led with 29 digs in the match plus a pair of service aces. CMS kept UPS to a negative hitting percentage in the second and third sets.

Next up for the Athenas is hosting Caltech Thursday, Sept. 10 and then participating in the Posada Royale Invitational hosted by Cal Lutheran Sept. 11-12.
