Straight set wins for Athenas in Pacific Coast Classic

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team did not drop a set in their season opener at the Pacific Coast Classic Tournament. The Athenas beat New York University 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-11) and Pacific University (Ore.) 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-14).

The youth of the CMS was imperceptible they hit .367 over both matches. Only two starters were upperclassmen as the other five were sophomores. Junior Nicole Kerkhof (CMC) was wildly efficient, only committing one error in 46 swings while recording 25 kills.

"Nicole really set the tone for the team," said head coach Kurt Vlasich. He added, "today, they played like veterans even though it's a young group."

Sophomores Shelbi Stein (CMC) and Crystal Anderson (CMC) each added 17 kills today.

The lone senior, Tanner Hoke (CMC) had the majority of the assists during the day, with 20 against NYU and 12 against Pacific. She also led the team with six service aces over the course of the six games.

On the defensive side, sophomore Mikena Werner (CMC) stepped into the libero role and performed beautifully. She had 18 digs on the night and was a steadying force on the floor.

Tomorrow, the Athenas (2-0) face Carthage College (2-0) and University of Puget Sound (0-2) at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. respectively in the Linde Activities Center at Harvey Mudd College.
