SCIAC Tournament championship hopes for CMS dashed by Cal Lu once again
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. – With an opportunity to clinch an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships on the line, the 18th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team lost in three sets at No. 3 California Lutheran in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament finals on Nov. 8 at Gilbert Arena.
Cal Lu took the match 25-19, 26-24, 25-18. With the win, Cal Lu improved to 28-2 and earned the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships which begin next week. For the second-straight season, Cal Lu defeated CMS in three sets in the SCIAC Postseason Tournament title match. The loss drops CMS to 24-6. CMS now has to wait until Monday, Nov. 10 at 8 a.m. PST for the NCAA Selection Show to find out whether or not they get an at-large bid to the NCAAs.
With a commanding 2-0 lead, Cal Lu pulled away midway through the third set to seal the victory and earn the SCIAC Postseason Tournament championship.
Breitwieser and sophomore outside hitter Nicole Kerkhof (CMC) were both in double-figures in kills with 12 and 10, respectively. Kerkhof also had 16 digs while senior libero Megan Coleman (CMC) had 21 digs. Junior setter Tanner Hoke (CMC) had 20 assists to lead CMS.
Cal Lu was led by the 14 kills and 17 digs from Allie Eason and 21 assists from Kennedy Peters. Cal Lu limited CMS to a .113 attack percentage and CMS committed 21 attack errors to just 13 by Cal Lu.
