CMS rallied for 3-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer with big crowd at the LAC

(Watch Highlights)

CLAREMONT, Calif. – In a packed gym with a lively crowd, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team beat cross-campus rivals Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday night in four sets (25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 25-22). The Athenas rallied from behind to take the first set and then continued to battle to win the match.

During the regular season last year, the Sagehens seemed to have had CMS' number, beating the Athenas twice in SCIAC play. CMS got their revenge during the conference tournament in November and took down Pomona-Pitzer in four sets. This year, the Athenas started where they left off in 2013 against the Hens with tonight's exciting win.

Late in the first set, CMS trailed 23-19 before going on a six-point run to win 25-23. One of the biggest plays of the set was when junior Arianna Sifuentes made a diving dig to save an aggressive attack from PP's Allie Frappier, ultimately earning CMS the point to come within one at 23-22.

In the subsequent sets, CMS did well closing out games when they were ahead late in the set. The Athenas took the two game lead winning the second set 25-22.

On the night, sophomore Nicole Kerkhof led the Athenas with 21 kills, a season high for her. The digs were primarily spread among three players: Kerkhof (16), Sifuentes (15) and Megan Coleman (23).

The team only had one service error on the entire evening, a definite improvement from last Saturday's game against La Verne.

Head coach Kurt Vlasich was proud of how his upper classmen took control and played with enthusiasm but remained grounded like the veterans they are. Senior Regina Mullen and junior Audrey Breitwieser each recorded 13 kills and were big contributors to the Athenas' victory.

On Pomona-Pitzer, Frappier recorded 30 kills, her second highest so far this season.

Next week, the Athenas (13-4, 4-1 SCIAC) host Redlands (1-9, 1-4 SCIAC) on Oct. 4 at 6 p.m. and then travel to Chapman (3-10, 2-2 SCIAC) on Oct. 7.
