CMS downs Chapman in four in SCIAC rematch

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team beat Chapman 3-1 tonight in Ducey Gym (25-14, 21-25, 25-21, 25-11).  In their last meeting Chapman bested CMS in five sets leading to this highly anticipated SCIAC rematch.

CMS came out aggressive from the very first serve.  With an attack percentage of .412 the Athenas easily won the first set 25-14.

Chapman jumped out to an early lead in the second set but CMS fought back to tie it up at 17. The Panthers earned a handful of points and won the set 25-21.

The Athenas came roaring back in the third set with strong attacks by sophomore Audrey Breitwieser.  A win put CMS up 2-1 going into the fourth set.

After winning the third set 25-21, the momentum was entirely with the Athenas.  CMS recorded 15 kills and only one error and took the set 25-11.

Senior Hilary Bruegl was back in as the Athenas' setter tonight and had 50 assists. Additionally, junior Regina Mullen re-entered the Athenas' lineup and contributed 12 kills. Breitwieser had team high 18 kills with freshman Nicole Kerkhof right behind her with 17 kills. Junior Monique Nguyen recorded eight blocks on the night.

With the win over Chapman tonight, CMS extends their win streak to six games. The Athenas are back in action on Friday afternoon at 12 pm vs. Rose-Hulman in Ducey Gym.
