Pomona-Pitzer bests CMS in 6th Street rivalry game

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's volleyball team was beat by Pomona-Pitzer 3-0 on Tuesday night in Ducey Gym (27-25, 26-24, 25-23). CMS battled but could not take a set off Pomona-Pitzer.

The Athenas led for most of the first set and were up 20-12 at one point but the Sagehens fought back. Pomona-Pitzer went on a run and eventually tied it up at 23 points each.

With the score tied at 25, CMS was called for a rotation error and Pomona-Pitzer was awarded a point to put them ahead 26-25.  The set ended with a kill by junior OH Allie Frappier to put the Sagehens up 1-0 over CMS.

Pomona-Pitzer led the entirety of the second set until the Athenas tied the game at 24 points. The Sagehens scored two quick points to win the set to go up 2-0 in the match.

CMS and Pomona-Pitzer traded points at the beginning of the third set and then the Athenas scored five in a row on freshman OH Nicole Kerkhof's serve to take a 21-14 lead. The Sagehens got the serve back and scored seven points in a row to win the set and the match.

The Athenas were unable to contain Pomona-Pitzer's Frappier who led her team with 27 kills.

Sophomore OH Audrey Breitwieser and senior OH Regina Mullen had 15 and 13 kills respectively for the Athenas.  Sophomore S Tanner Hoke had 43 assists on the night.

The Athenas travel to Occidental to take on the Tigers in another SCIAC contest on Friday (10/4).
