Athenas Volleyball Wins Two on Friday Night

The CMS Volleyball squad picked up two wins in as many matches Friday at Ducey Gym. The team began the evening with a decisive victory over La Sierra University. The Athenas started six underclassmen and hit just .074 in the first set allowing La Sierra 15 points before the team settled down and dramatically decreased its unforced errors en route to a 25-10 win in set two. Set three was all CMS. When the La Sierra setter was grounded by an ankle sprain momentum swung and remained with the Athenas who recorded just one attacking error in the set and won 25-2. Freshman outside hitter, Kelly Halamek (Palo Alto, CA) was outstanding in the effort, recording 10 kills on 19 attempts with only a single hitting error. She also pitched in 6 digs and 2 service aces. Sophomore Emily Hudson (So. Pasadena, CA) was also strong tallying 6 kills for a .455 hitting percentage.

Match two featured CMS against Dickinson College. The Athenas carried over their strong play from earlier in the day, committing just 5 hitting errors for the match to overcome the Red Devils in three sets (25-9, 25-7, 25-12). Junior outside hitter Jenna Suttmeier (Issaquah, WA) led CMS offensively, notching 10 kills in 20 attempts while senior middle blocker Jamie Matusiak (Tucson, AZ) added 8 kills of her own, hitting .583 on the night off freshman setter Taylor Jones (Scottsdale, AZ) who had 30 assists. Jessica Waggoner (Scottsdale, AZ) dominated both teams defensively with 14 digs and near perfect serve receive.
