CMS 800 Relay Sets School, SCIAC Record on Third Day of NCAA Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's swimming and diving team was only entered in two events on Friday on the third day of the NCAA Division III Championships, but they performed at a high level in both, setting a new school and SCIAC record in the 800-yard freestyle relay.

The relay team of sophomore Allie Umemoto, senior Riley Hoffman, sophomore Natalia Orbach-Mandel, and freshman Leila El Masri finished in 7:35.15, breaking the old school record of 7:36.40 which was set last year.  Their time was good for 14th place overall at the event, picking up six points for the CMS total, which is now at 22, putting the Athenas in 25th place. 

The only individual in action for CMS on Friday was junior Jocelyn Crawford, who competed in the 100-yard backstroke. Although her time of 56.73 just missed qualifying for the evening session by .13, she swam almost 2.5 seconds faster than her top time of the year coming in (59.11). 

Tomorrow's final day will see a larger contingent of CMS athletes competing, as sophomore Mia Syme will try for All-America honors in the 1650, coming into the NCAA Championships seeded ninth in the field. Freshman Augusta Lewis, who already has honorable mention honors in the 200 IM and 400 IM, will try to add a third to her list when she competes in the 200-yard breaststroke, while the 400-yard freestyle relay team will compete in the final event of the tournament. 

On the men's side, sophomore Marco Conati will swim in the 100 free after finishing fourth in the 100 fly yesterday, and junior Kendall Hollimon will compete in the three-meter dive, which he finished fourth in last year.
