CMS Women's Soccer Game Suspended by Lightning with Athenas up 1-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team had its game with Cal Lutheran suspended after the first half of play, with the Athenas leading 1-0, and will be completed on Sunday, Oct. 30.

Nithya Yeluri scored a first-half goal when she finished a shot from Kaitlyn Helfrich that was deflected by the Cal Lutheran defense. Cate Lewison helped set the play up by outmanuevering three Cal Lutheran players (two defenders and the goalkeeper) for a loose ball, leaving an empty net behind her, and after Helfrich's first attempt was blocked, Yeluri was able to finish.

Tori Holden almost made it 2-0 moments later, but her shot hit off the crossbar. The score remained 1-0 until the half, and just when the second-half kickoff was about to take place, lightning struck nearby and the game went into a 30-minute delay. The storm didn't subside after two hours, and the teams agreed to resume at a later date.

The game will pick up again on Oct. 30 at the point of suspension, with CMS holding a 1-0 lead at halftime.
