Kaitlyn Helfrich Wins Second SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award for CMS Women's Soccer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - For the second time in three weeks, first-year midfielder Kaitlyn Helfrich captured the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team, the league office announced today.

Helfrich earned it this week after providing a golden goal in the only CMS contest of the week, scoring just over three minutes into overtime as the Athenas took a key 2-1 road win at La Verne to improve to 4-2-3 in conference this season. CMS led 1-0 late, before the Leopards tied it late to take the momentum going into overtime, but Helfrich sent a 20-yard blast on a one-timer off a feed from Ava Schmitt directly into the upper-left corner to give the Athenas the dramatic win.

The goal was the team-leading seventh of the year for Helfrich, four of which have been game-winners in one-goal wins on the road. The third came in a 2-1 win at Caltech, when she had both CMS goals, earning her the SCIAC Offensive Player of the Week Award for the first time on Oct. 4. She also had the game-winner in a 4-3 win at Redlands (when she had two goals) and in a 1-0 win at UC Santa Cruz.

CMS will try to pick up another big road win on Wednesday, when it travels down Mills Avenue to face Pomona-Pitzer for a 4 p.m. contest. The Athenas will then be at home to take on UC Santa Cruz in a rematch on Saturday at 12 noon.
