Helfrich Scores Golden Goal in 2-1 Victory Over La Verne

LA VERNE, Calif. - Kaitlyn Helfrich scored on a one-timer from the top of the 18-yard box just over three minutes into the first overtime session, as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team captured a 2-1 road win over La Verne on Saturday night.

CMS saw its record improve to 7-2-3, including 4-2-3 in the SCIAC, with the victory. La Verne fell to 2-11 and 2-7 in the league.

The game-winning goal came when Ava Schmitt ran a ball down in the left corner, before cutting back to the middle and laying a pass towards the top of the 18-yard box to find Helfrich, who one-timed a shot into the upper-left corner for the golden goal in overtime.

The Athenas outshot the Beavers 16-9, while Athena Manthouli had three saves on the night for CMS.

After back and forth play where neither team was able to take an advantage through the first 75 minutes of play, Sam Ree found a loose ball from 12 yards while escaping defenders and was able to send a strike past McKenzie Maggiore to give CMS a 1-0 lead. The Leopards responded eight minutes later once Shelbie Mueller sent in a goal for La Verne in a scramble off a corner kick, tying the game at 1-1 in the 83rd minute.

The Athenas were able to respond and capture the game-winning goal once Schimitt played Helfrich for the winner, as she found back of the net for the seventh time this season, a team best.

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to take on the Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at 4 p.m. in another Sixth Street rivalry matchup.
