CMS Women's Soccer Takes 3-0 Road Win Over Whittier

WHITTIER, Calif. - Ava Sherry and Ava Schmitt scored first half goals two minutes apart, and Kaitlyn Helfrich added a goal in the second half as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team defeated Whittier on the road 3-0 on Wednesday evening at Memorial Stadium.

With the win, CMS improves to 5-1-2 on the season and 2-1-2 in the SCIAC, taking an important step forward in league play after consecutive ties last week against Chapman and Occidental. Whittier slips to 2-6 overall and 2-3 in the league.

CMS and Whittier met in a non-conference game earlier this season, and CMS scored two goals less than two minutes apart in the opening minutes of that one, with Sherry scoring the game-winner just four minutes into the contest. It took a little longer this time around, but the same thing happened with Sherry getting the game-winner and the Athenas adding a second goal just moments later.

This time around, Sherry broke the scoreless tie a the 26:27 mark of the first half, and Schmitt came through with a goal just 2:13 later to make it a 2-0 game at the 28:40 mark. The score held at 2-0 until the second half, when Helfrich found the net with 26:15 to play, putting the game out of reach at 3-0.

Athena Manthouli had five saves for the Athenas to get the shutout, four of which came in the second half. CMS finished with a 13-8 edge in shots, although Whittier had three of the game's four corner kicks.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday for another conference road game when it heads to Caltech for an 11 a.m. kickoff.
