CMS Women's Soccer Drops 1-0 Road Decision to No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer

CLAREMONT, Calif. - After controlling play for the first 20 minutes, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team yielded an early-second half goal and dropped a 1-0 decision to No. 7 Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday afternoon in the second Sixth Street Rivalry game of the season.

With the loss, CMS slips to 8-3-3 and 4-3-2 in the SCIAC, while Pomona-Pitzer bounced back from its first loss of the year against Cal Lutheran and improves to 12-1-1 and 8-1-0 in league play.

The Athenas came out on their front foot and held a 6-0 advantage in shots 20 minutes into the game. Senior Sarah Tocher forced an early save from Pomona-Pitzer goalie Isa Berardo in the fourth minute, and first-year midfielder Stella Kahl had two shot attempts in the first 10 minutes. Senior Kira Favakeh missed wide off a corner kick in the 18th minute, giving CMS six shots to none for the Sagehens.

Pomona-Pitzer started to swing the momentum at the end of the first half and pulled the shot margin within 6-3 at intermission, forcing junior goalie Cam Hamson to make a pair of saves. The momentum carried over into the second half as Hannah Mandell scored for the Sagehens 6:12 into the second stanza for the game's only goal.

CMS defender Samantha Ree forced Berardo to make another save in the 58th minute, which was followed quickly by senior midfielder Rhiann Holman missing wide in the 59th minute. From there, the Sagehens held CMS without a shot attempt on its way to the 1-0 win.

Hamson finished with seven saves for the Athenas, as Pomona-Pitzer finished with a 15-8 edge in shots (12-2 in the second half).

The Athenas will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Cal Lutheran for a big SCIAC contest at 7 p.m.
