CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior defender Ava Sherry, first-year forward Vida Hasson and senior forward Sarah Tocher each scored goals as the CMS women's soccer team came away with a 3-0 home win over Whittier on Saturday evening at Pritzlaff Field.

With the win, CMS improves to 6-1-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the SCIAC, earning its way back into the win column after starting out 5-0-1. Whittier sees its record slip to 1-4-5 overall and 1-2-3 in league play. 

The Athenas got in the board in the first half off a set piece as first-year midfielder Lizzie Iwicki took a free kick from the left side of the field. She rolled a pass outside the top of the 18-yard box to Sherry, who gathered the pass and then cracked a left-footed shot into the upper-left corner with 11:45 remaining in the opening stanza. 



The lead held until the final seven minutes, when CMS tacked on two more goals. Sherry sent a ball into the box that found its way to Hasson near the top of the 18-yard box. Hasson then hit a one-timer that found its way into the bacl of the net with 6:59 to go to give the Athenas an insurance goal. 

CMS wasn't quite done yet, as senior forward Sarah Tocher took a pass from senior midfielder Rhiann Holman inside the box and rattled a shot off the inside of the left post and into the net to make it a 3-0 game with just 3:03 remaining on the clock. 

Sophomore goalie Athena Manthouli went the distance in the second half to get the shutout win for the Athenas, although she did not need to make a save due to the strong defense in front of her, keyed by center backs Grace Pratt and Gracyn Buenconsejo. Vanessa Martinez had 10 saves for Whittier in the losing cause, keeping her team in the game until the closing minutes. 

CMS will be back in action on Wednesday when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer at 7 p.m. for a big battle between Sixth Street rivals.
