Ostrom's Second Half Goal lifts CMS Women's Soccer past Redlands, 1-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. -- The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Women's soccer team used an early second-half goal by Katrina Ostrom and solid defense to defeat Redlands 1-0 on Saturday night at Pritzlaff Field.

The Athenas remain unbeaten and once scored upon and improve to 4-0-1 on the season with the one-goal win and Redlands falls to 3-2-0 with the loss. The goal of remaining undefeated through non-conference play was achieved by the CMS Women's soccer team after a scoreless first half gave way to an early second-half goal by Ostrom to seal a 1-0 victory in a non-conference matchup with Redlands.

CMS outshot Redlands 6-5 in the first half with four on goal for both teams as Bulldogs' starting goalie Brittany Dinkins made all four saves that she faced in the opening frame. Cam Hamson equaled Dinkins with four saves in the first half and we went into the half with a scoreless soccer game at Pritzlaff Field.

Just 1:28 into the second half, the Athenas found the back of the net, Ostrom pounced on a lead pass from Rhiann Holman at the top of the box and one-timed it past new Redlands goalie Courtney Stewart to take the lead 1-0 on Ostrom's first goal of the season. CMS was backed up once again by solid goaltending from Hamson who saved all six shots faced in the game. In the second half, the Athenas backed up Hamson when a ball got through and the defense cleared it off the line to keep the game scoreless.

With 25 minutes left in the game, the Athenas used their wing play from Elizabeth Ueland to Mia Duranczyk and pushed upfront by Holman that resulted in a good scoring opportunity for Sarah Tocher that just sailed high of the net on one of the better opportunities to add to their lead late in the game.

CMS pushed the tempo for much of the game earning eight corner kicks in total and outshooting Redlands 13-10 overall. Holman tested the goaltender twice on a pair of well-placed shots, as did Vida Hasson, who played with intensity and solid form at the striker position, working her way into three shots with two on goal. The Athenas have allowed one goal this season and have delivered four shutouts at home so far. CMS completed non-conference with a 4-0-1 record and saw a preview of what SCIAC play will bring with a shutout win over Redlands.

The Athenas open SCIAC play with a road contest at La Verne (1-3) on Sat., Sep. 21 at 7 p.m., and then return home to face Occidental on Wed., Sep. 28 at 7 p.m. for the first midweek game of the season.
