Early Redlands Score Holds, Athenas Wrap 2017 Season

CLAREMONT, Calif. – With the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team needing a victory to extend their season to the SCIAC Playoffs, the Athenas fell in heartbreaking fashion 1-0 to the Redlands Bulldogs. A goal early in the first-half off the foot of Hayley Romo was the difference in the contest.

Despite a strong effort in the match, the Athenas were unable to find the equalizer. CMS fired four shots on goal in the second-half, but Redlands' keeper Hannah Menk saved all four attempts.

The Redlands goal came just moments into the match. In just the second minute, Hayley Romo received a pass from Madison Mills well outside the box. Romo took touch toward the center of the field and ripped a shot to the left side of the goal for the early 1-0 lead.

The Athenas dug in and attempted to push through the Bulldogs' defense, but Redlands would only allow nine shots on the night. CMS put together some quality chances late in the match, but their opportunities were turned away and the Bulldogs held on for the 1-0 victory. The win for Redlands puts the Bulldogs into the SCIAC Playoffs while the loss for CMS, brings the 2017 season to an end.

The Athenas finish the season with a 6-7-5 record overall and a 4-5-5 mark in the SCIAC.
