Defense shuts out Poets in 1-0 victory

Whittier, CA - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team (7-4, 5-1) edged out the Whittier Poets (3-4-3, 1-3-2) with a 1-0 victory on Saturday night thanks to a lone goal from senior Katelyn Faust (CMC). The defense played tight on Whittier the entire game, as junior Jaycee Coniff (HMC), sophomore Sydney Talmi (CMC), and senior Emily Cassell (CMC) broke up a lot of the Poets chances for their sixth shutout of the season. Senior Kelly McConnell (HMC) was hardly tested as she only needed to make two saves while Whittier's keeper Alexi Cruz worked for five saves. The Athenas had more control on the offensive end, outshooting the Poets 13 to 7.

After a scoreless half, the Athenas wasted no time to get on the scoresheet as freshman Sarah Tocher (CMC) and senior Laynee Laube (CMC) combined to find Faust for the goal in the 46th minute.

The Poets almost found the equalizer in the 65th minute when Leah Kolek managed a shot off Kanoe Morihara's corner kick, but was saved by McConnell.

Sophomore Sarah Malott (CMC) almost made it double for CMC in the 78th minute, her shot was blocked and cleared away.

The Athenas will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 5 to host Chapman (5-4-1, 2-3-1) at 7 p.m.
