Penalty kick goal not enough for Athenas against UCSC

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps women's soccer team came up short against a persistent UC Santa Cruz team, 2-1. On the hot Sunday afternoon the Athenas' only score was on a penalty kick late in the second half by Makella Brems.

While there was no scoring in the first half, CMS pushed the game into the Banana Slugs' half and outshot UCSC 6-2. The Athenas had two especially good chances during the half. The first was a rocket shot by Katelyn Faust that hit the crossbar. The other opportunity came near the end of the half with a cross from the right corner by Isabel Lester that no one was able to put a foot on.

In the second half, Sara Sadler for Santa Cruz scored in the 67th minute. After a corner kick from the left side by Claire Lim, Sadler was able to put it past CMS' keeper Molly Freed to break the 0-0 tie. The Banana Slugs struck again in the 83rd minute when Sadler broke away from the Athenas' defense. Freed came out of the goal but was unable to get a hand on it as Sadler buried the ball in the net.

Trailing 2-0, CMS kept the pressure on and drew a yellow card in UCSC's box to earn a penalty kick. Brems took the kick for the Athenas and made it look easy, shooting past the keeper to the lower left corner.

Time expired before CMS was able to mount another attack leaving the game at 2-1 in UC Santa Cruz's (4-3-1) favor.

The Athenas (3-2-1) host Cal Lutheran to begin SCIAC play on Wednesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
